Who or what inspired you to become an artist? How or in what way?

I could sit here and tell you how my life has been super crazy with my son graduating from Elementary School, and the last two weeks of school and fieldtrips, and planning birthday parties, and trying to clean up our house and some of this, and some of that…Or I could just get to it and start answering your questions…. so yeah. let’s do that.

I am going to answer all of them here, and then move the FAQ on to that special page, which I still don’t know where it will go.

In no particular order:

Who or what inspired you to become an artist? How or in what way?

Ever since I can remember, I was drawing or painting. I am lucky enough to come from a family in which art has always been a focus. My parents have collected art, and my father even owned a gallery at one point. My parents liked to travel, and everywhere we went, the first stop was the museums. Our house had every art book you can think of.

As I grew up, my Mom always made sure I was experimenting in different classes and with different teachers. I even took many life drawing as well as enamel classes  before I was 15. She always made sure I nurtured my creative side.

In High School, I was approached by my High School art teacher one day and she asked me “What do you think you are going to major in and what schools are you applying to?” I told her most likely business, seemed like the right  thing to do. She was shocked and strongly encouraged me to apply to Art Schools and explained all about commercial art and design.  Which is exactly what I ended up doing. I am thankful that she opened my perspectives and encouraged me to focus on what I loved, otherwise I’d be one frustrated and incompetent accountant.

note: The photo is my family when I was about 6 years old on a trip we took to Austria during a time when we lived in Spain.

Wow Maite what a great story, I always wondered that about you as well. I find you to be so amazingly experimental in your work–which sets you apart from others! Love your work and your website!

    hugs!

  2. That’s really cool all that you were introduced to at such a young age. I try to do the same with my monsters… hopefully one of them will be as talented as you!
