More Q&A

How do you maintain the balance in your life? Creative vs. business, life vs. work , juggling schedules?

This is a tough one because I don’t think I’m all that successful at balancing everything. There are so many aspects to my life where I need to be present, and not enough hours in the day. I am actually trying to set up some kind of schedule (“no excuse schedule”) so I can manage my time more successfully.

I am still trying to find a balance between the creative and the business side. I think most artists are (like me) lousy business people (though I do know quite a few exceptions). We’d rather be in the studio than doing the business side of our careers. Maybe that’s where the “starving artist” term came about. I have pushed myself to feel more comfortable on that business side, and it’s not easy, but I’m trying. Last year I got together with 5 other artists and formed art6. One of the things we tackle is the business of being  artists, so this past year that business/creative scale has been more leveled.

Life vs. work? ha! this is even tougher. With 2 kids, it gets tricky, between cooking, carpools, afterschool classes, homework, I’m not left with much time.  I try to paint in the mornings while they are at school, sometimes I’ll be able to find bits of time during a quiet afternoon…those days though, dinner may not be too exciting.

I think if you are passionate about something, you need to somehow find a way to juggle to fit it into your daily life. You will be happy and in turn you will find a way to make it all work, or at least go through life smiling while tripping over laundry.
